Beyond useful! ★★★★★
by Danster547 – Version 2.7.4 – May 9, 2013
I like to read, but my eyes get strained looking at a computer screen. This app allows me rest my eyes, do other things at the same time, understand what I hear better and faster than if I just read it and its saved on my phone which allows me to take it anywhere I go. I was hesitant about paying $10 for an app but I have no regrets. Extremely solid and impressive! Thanks so much for making this!

Great! ★★★★★

Love this app. Adjust speed. Change voice. Read along. Great interface. Well done ! A steal at $10 when you think about it.

Works flawlessly. ★★★★★

One of the most useful apps that I have acquired. Thanks for delivering a good product at a fair price.

Excellent in every way! ★★★★★
by AviddReader – Version 2.7.4 – Apr 21, 2013
With this feature-rich app, reading is a pleasure. If one is listening, there is a wide selection of voices, including the human-sounding Kate and Paul from NeoSpeech. A fully-inclusive app. Of particular value to reading-disabled is its seamless integration with Bookshare.org’s library. What Voice Dream claims to do, it does well. Fine value for the price.

Fantastic app ★★★★★

Best reading app around. Love the way it just works. Great voices too. You wont be disappointed.

Awesome app! ★★★★★
by ChuckHoffman – Version 2.7.4 – Apr 19, 2013
I love this app! I find it very useful for listening to articles that I don’t have time to sit and read. I listen while I am walking and get exercise at the same time. As you should expect, the speech is not as good as a real person talking. Because it is computer-generated, I don’t expect it to be perfect, but it is quite good. I’m often impressed how good the voice inflections actually are! And it has some great features, too. One of the features I use all of the time: When I see a long Internet article that I am interested in, I send the URL (link) to Pocket (Read It Later). Within a few minutes, it shows up in Voice Dream, so I can listen to it. (or read it if I want). Some really useful new features and enhancements come with each upgrade. The developer is quite responsive and does a great job enhancing this program. I use it almost every day, and wish more people knew about it. It should win some awards for productivity apps! I’m even more impressed with the latest upgrade. This program ROCKS!

Changed my life! ★★★★★
by Jde05346 – Version 2.7.4 – Apr 11, 2013
Update to my earlier review: I continue to uncover additional hidden value in this app- syncing with pocket reader allos me to easily clip articles whether I am on iphone, ipad or pc and then always have access to those articles via dreamvoice anywhere/time. Thank you developers! I know that sounds over the top, but as a very busy professional w/ significant ADD issues, this app is a huge help to me. It allows me to “read” scores of professional journal articles easily accessible via built in browser that I would never otherwise get to and student papers from my dropbox that after listening to them fully on a car ride or at gym or whatever, when I sit down to finally write feedback, I am already familiar with what they wrote. Plus I am able to make bookmarks or even write comments from within the app as I’m listening! There has been no crashing, and so far everything is working incredibly smooth. Bonus features for future editions would include a sleep timer, the option to leave audio bookmarks, and sending edited audio file via dropbox or email. Perhaps in the works? Truly, this is a tremendous product worth the $10 cost!

Amazing and effective ★★★★★
by Eli92 – Version 2.7.4 – Apr 9, 2013
Voice Dream is heaven sent. I have a habit of clipping way more articles than I have time to read. In the o,d days the paper would pileup around the house. Now bits pile up in the ether. Either way I can’t keep up with all the things I am interested in. Voice Dream changes that. I have it linked to my Pocket account and everything I clip at my desk is with me in my pocket as I go through my day. While driving or doing things around the house I am able to listen to the articles and cover much more than I could by reading. The voices are excellent (I have bought 2 additional ones which are better quality). The integration is excellent and the controls are excellent. Lastly, I had some questions during the initial setup and received a personalized answer remarkably quickly. I have had another occasion to contact the developer and he again responded quickly and effectively. If you are looking for a text to speech app for whatever reason, look no further. Voice Dream is the answer to your dreams.

Voice Dream is a dream come true. ★★★★★
by Ree28am – Version 2.7.4 – Apr 8, 2013
This app is just what I had been looking for. I don’t always have time to read my e-books, but with this app, I can listen while doing chores or commuting. I easily switch between reading and listening since the app highlights where I am. The customer service great and is actually concerned with the customer. The response time was quick, and my questions were answered directly. This product is great and well worth the money. I excitedly await added features and recommend it to anyone looking for an inexpensive text-to-speech program.

Best Mobile TTS ★★★★★
by AuralReader – Version 2.7.4 – Apr 8, 2013
This app is the GOLD standard for mobile TTS. If you’re not sure if this is for you, try the Lite version which is a free demo. I use it to keep up with my expanding reading list on my commute. The voices are as good as synthesized voices get, and you can listen offline without an Internet connection. New updates come all the time with significant new features. TTS software like this on a PC are many times more expensive. Unlike a PC, now I take my reading everywhere. No other app comes close in richness and usability. Highlight recommended.

Fantastic for listening to eBooks and PDF ★★★★★
by Giggi1972 – Version 2.7.4 – Apr 8, 2013
This app is great. Very polished. The voices are the best out there. They offer great support and constant updates with wonderful new features. I can load up ePub and PDF books from Dropbox and scroll through 1000-page and it’s silky smooth. Buy it and you’ll wonder how’d ever get by without it. Update: love Bridget voice in the new version. Also Google Drive: fantastic for schools!

LOVE THIS APP ★★★★★
by Theresa111 – Version 2.7.4 – Apr 7, 2013
Such a great app. Love the voice of Will the best. He’s better than Apple’s Alex. Now, to make this app better, PLEASE put a sleep timer in it. Please!!! the timer on my Itouch doesn’t turn off Dream Reader, thus playing content all night long in my ear as i sleep. not good. this is a must fix!

Killer app! ★★★★★
by Kyle122436 – Version 2.7.4 – Apr 2, 2013
Voice Dream does what all apps should do- go way above and beyond all competitors with functionality and frequent updates. I have ADHD and this app is a life saver with easy audio converting for reading assignments. Neo-speech voices are incredible.

Voice dream reader ★★★★★
by Dreamer Judy – Version 2.7.4 – Apr 1, 2013
Great app. I have a reader on my home PC and was skeptical that an App would be the dame quality, but it is!! well worth the small investment if you like to listen to things that are only in print.

Fantastic ★★★★★
by StashKitty – Version 2.7.3 – Apr 1, 2013
I have a reading disability. The device designed to help people with my disability costs $500. This app provides the same functionality for less than 1% of the cost. And because its inside my iPhone, that’s one less piece of assistive technology to truck around with me. THANK YOU!

By far the best TTS app, but… ★★★★
by ChrisBanach – Version 2.7.3 – Mar 27, 2013
I would give it 5 stars if it allowed to EXPORT the spoken sentences, for example in mp3 or wav format. They could offer this as an extra service, with a fee (for example $4.99 for 100 words). Similar to the way Acapella does it online. I’d definitely pay to be able to get the generated sound files, since I want to install my own PBX phone system for my business. Such a feature would be of tremendous value for so many people, in various uses. Please think about it! Otherwise the app is perfect, so many options, bells and whistles. However, the 2 “premium” voices available, JULIE and PAUL, come at a higher price tag of $2.99 each, but they both are by far the best voices you’ll find on this app (along the default free one that comes with it: HEATHER), and certainly the best voices available on any TTS app. Not only they sound realistic, but the way they manage tone on punctuation is perfect! Thanks for this amazing app, and please consider the mp3 export feature add-on. PS: don’t listen to the review that says you can’t type in your own text in the app. This user obviously didn’t your the app guide long enough, because when you press on the + sign, you can open an editor and type whatever you want and have the voice say it out loud. But again, the only limitation I see here, is that it should allow to generate the speech into an mp3 file and allow to email it out with an extra fee.

Works Awesome, Highly Recommended ★★★★★
by mswb10 – Version 2.7.3 – Mar 27, 2013
This is exactly what I was looking for. Helps me to quickly extract text from PDFs to read to me. The text to speech works great!

Good voice ★★★★★
by Habakkuk – Version 2.7.3 – Mar 25, 2013
The included 1 free voice is more natural than the native iOS voice.

Amazing app + incredible tech support ★★★★★
by Seabrine – Version 2.7.3 – Mar 24, 2013
I have been looking for a TTS app that could use quality, human-sounding voices and saw some reviews while googling. This is the best app I’ve used, ever, including PC based Naturalreader, etc. This app ties to your Dropbox, Instapaper or other accounts to get your text for import. I put ePubs, PDFs and other material (English & Spanish). This app gets it all and speaks it to me with a good voice included and more for purchase at $1.99 each–these are $35 voices for other Windows apps. This app is phenomenal and such a deal. Lastly, tech support in app email was answered on a Sunday until my issue was resolved. Thanks!!!

Simply the best ★★★★★
by DarkBanHammer – Version 2.7.3 – Mar 24, 2013
This is hands down the best tts reader for the iPhone. The voices are very good quality and many you can pick from. They are worth every penny. As for the review where the guy wants to type then have it read out to him you can. The best part is the background book reading. I have tried many other tts apps for playing books and none give you the option for over 10 voices. Don’t think about buying it and go get it you will not regret it. Comes with one voice and you can buy more voices via in app. They are worth the money plus you can restore what you bought and use them in all of your devices.

Love this thing!! ★★★★★
by NurseSparkle – Version 2.7.3 – Mar 22, 2013
I literally use this thing every day! This app makes it possible to read wherever you are. Stuck in traffic, before going to bed, in the shower, cooking ect. I also found this app to be a big help when it comes to writing. I can’t tell you how many times I proof read something only to find glaring mistakes after listening to this app read it back.

Great for listening to Epubs ★★★★★
by Rayven01 – Version 2.7.3 – Mar 22, 2013
This app works wonderfully for listening to Epubs. It’s not quite as good as a real audiobook but much cheaper than buying both formats for those that like to listen to the same book they’re reading while in the car. It’s really quite nice for reading without the audio as well, with more flexible display options than iBooks and other ebook apps. The only feature it’s missing to completely replace iBooks for me is a page turn feature rather than continuous scroll. Highly recommend it!

Absolutely worth it. ★★★★★
by tobystereo – Version 2.7.3 – Mar 22, 2013

Voice Dream Reader has helped me achieve my goal of reading a book a week. To me it is the best way to listen to books and articles when I’m on the road. I love the option to buy additional voices and the ability to have voices from different languages.

Very good ★★★★★
by LRM 1985 – Version 2.7.3 – Mar 22, 2013
I have been searching for a while now for good text to speech pdf/word readers. This has been the best I have found so far. Very easy to use. Totally recommend it.

An excellent web reading app ★★★★★
by Staya – Version 2.7.2 – Mar 22, 2013
Was looking for an app that would read long web articles to me. This IS that app, and it seems to be working great !

Very Good ★★★★
by Rashmid – Version 2.7.2 – Mar 18, 2013
This is better than other two I have. I would have given 5-stars if it would load my PDF without changing/extracting the format. If We are used to reading with PDF from other reader and all of a sudden it changes the look and mixes the heading of chapters, includes the foot note in middle of page etc. It is VERY difficult to find the specific items I like to voice read from a large book. It should load the PDF as it is from the source. I like the option to select the voices. Overall, It is very good but I hope they fix this problem.

Fantastic ★★★★★
by Elziejl – Version 2.7.2 – Mar 15, 2013
I’ve spend all kinds of time trying to find a way to have web articles read to me on the go. This app does it perfectly, covering all he ways that I access saved web articles (eg Instapaper, Evernote). Unbelievably good!

Good but pricey ★★★★
by Falal – Version 2.7.2 – Mar 14, 2013
I can’t blame them for going for whatever the market will bear, since this is the best app of a very limited selection, but charging $10 for the app plus another two dollars per voice is a bit steep. I first tried the free version and I didn’t realize that I would need to make an additional in app purchase once I bought the app in order to get the British voice that I liked from the trial version. The pricing left a bitter taste for what is otherwise a seemingly stellar app. I’m getting extremely weary of software developers harassing me for every last dime via micro-transactions. Aside from that, it has the features you would expect without the pitfalls of some of the other free apps, such as requiring a constant connection or crashing. The dropbox integration is nice. So far it has played every file I’ve tried. The voice does of course have that slightly digital, robotic quality but you get used to it quickly. It also has a strange habit with some of my EPUB books of speaking the word for a punctuation mark rather than incorporating it into the speech itself. For example it will say the words “single quote” out loud, or the word “dash”, even though it is a punctuation mark and not the words themselves that appear in the text. I would imagine there are some situations in which this would be useful, but listening to fiction is not one of them, and it would be nice to be able to turn it off. One other thing of note: I read a review that the app does not work with Bluetooth, which concerned me, but this seems to be false as the app works fine with my LG Bluetooth headset, including responding to the transport control buttons on the headset, which at least one of the other text-to-speech apps I tried did not do.

Great stuff ★★★★★
by jac1200 – Version 2.7.2 – Mar 14, 2013
Great voice quality, excellent cross-app integration. Responsive developer. I love it and anticipate even greater things to come.

Best text to speech! ★★★★★
by aslgoofy – Version 2.7.2 – Mar 12, 2013
I have literally downloaded all of the text to speech apps – both free and paid – and Voice Dream is the BEST! The ability to import directly from the web is phenomenal. I downloaded something that was over 20 hours of audio and was able to listen to huge chunks at a time with no problem. The horizontal scroll and search option is a dream come true. The customer service is better than ANY company I have ever dealt with. i just recently asked about a timer and received an answer in less than 24 hours. Absolutely my most used app. Thank you!

Superb ★★★★★
by Msurabian – Version 2.7.2 – Mar 12, 2013
I originally saw this app being suggested by the developer on Linked-in. Both the lite and the real versions are excellent considering one’s free and one is affordable. I’m very impressed with all of its features and especially its cloud access and storage capability. An excellent tool for students with learning disabilities…

The app I’ve been searching for ★★★★★
by Swedav66 – Version 2.7.2 – Mar 11, 2013
I have been searching for a long time for an app like this. It has everything I was looking for and more. This app was obviously designed by someone who is using it, not by someone designing software just to make money, Though I was happy to pay the price

Evolves like no other app ★★★★★
by Blindplay – Version 2.7.2 – Mar 10, 2013

Almost perfect ★★★★
by Talus Proteus – Version 2.7.2 – Mar 10, 2013
The overall functionality of this app is pretty great, and the lite version lets you try before you buy–that’s how I got hooked, so kudos to Winston on that. My one complaint is that there are some errors when reading PDFs. Nothing major (disjointed/choppy sentences; page numbers are read along with the text, which can be distracting). All these annoying problems went away, though, when I was reading the same text from a word document. Go figure. Other than that, there are a few oddities that seem to crop up everywhere (the em-dash is literally read as “em-dash,” sometimes single quotes are read as “single quotes;” I don’t see this problem with apostrophes, though). Minor quibbles. If they were fixed, I’d give it 5 stars. I’m inclined to do so anyway, since (a) this is the best text-to-speech reader I’ve used, and (b) Winston has amazing customer service and support.

Good app but a bit expensive ★★★★
by Book Critic – Version 2.7.2 – Mar 9, 2013
This app is the only one that I know where you can pick up from where you left off, even for a long ebook (iBook can’t do that). My only complaint is that the price is high for a reader app. I think it is still worth it if you like to listen to ebooks, but note that it cannot be used to read Kindles ebooks.

I’ve tried other text-to speech apps, and this is the best. Great versatility in the file types it takes, plus the ability to bookmark and highlight in long documents or (non-protected) e-books. Speech engine is not perfect, but is good 99.9% of the time. Overall a very usable program, not just a novelty.

Before giving this app a negative rating be sure and read the description properly of what this app does. What it does, it does it well. Not only that, but the developer is on top of things and communicates well with people when somebody writes him to make a suggestion or report a bug. All that being said, this is a great app for reading various types of documents. Please note that it will not read protected documents. This app is also voice over friendly for blind users. It has replaced my other various reading apps.

Voice dream reader ★★★★★
by Jagoley – Version 2.7.1 – Mar 3, 2013
Voice dream reader is the app I have been looking for, this last two years. I am physically disabled with severe chronic pain, And find it difficult to hold a book or laptop. For the last 10 years I have been using a text to speech program on my laptop. One of the things I liked about this Program was that it used voices by Neospeech. Two years ago I bought an iPod touch. It is easier to carry a few ounces rather than a heavy laptop, but I could not find a TTS app that would work Effectively with my iPod touch fourth generation, or that used voices by Neospeech. So I returned my iPod touch fourth generation and waited for a new app to come onto the iTunes store. Then this last February I was reading reviews on voice dream reader And saw how highly it was rated. Not only that, voices by Neospeech were offered for sale. I had used the Neospeech voice Paul for the previous 10 years on my laptop And knew I had found what I was looking for. I have not been disappointed with voice dream reader! The app is everything that it is advertised to be or do! I read a lot of books from Gutenberg.org, And the developer has made it dead simple to download books from this source. Not only that, if you have backed up your apps to your laptop, Your books that you have in voice dream reader are stored in its database. If your iPod touch crashes and you need to restore your iOS and apps from Your laptop, You do not lose your books! Voice dream reader has only been on the iTunes store for only about a year and yet it is the best TTS app available! The developer is planning to include a new voice by Neospeech called Bridget which is a British female voice Which is the best to date. I have been using Bridget on my laptop for the last year and a half And I’m looking forward to having her on my new iPod touch fifth-generation Along with Paul. As you can tell this is not only a five star review for voice dream reader it is also for the Neospeech voices, which are the best on the market. Thank you for the very best and most used app that I have on my iPod touch. I use voice dream reader close to eight hours a day! John

I am dyslexic and I am a graduate student, these things don’t always go hand in hand comfortably so I’m always on the lookout for tools to help me. This is an excellent app. It does what it promises and so much more. I use it constantly. If you love to learn but don’t always have tome to read, this app is a Godsend. It works well with Notability, Dropbox and Pocket. The in app browser allows you to save newspaper articles and have them read to you as you focus on other tasks. The voice quality is superb and can be controlled for speed and accent. I cannot say enough positive things about this App. It is well worth the price!

I love reading books, especially epubs, but it’s hard to read while I’m out hiking, or walking the dog, or cleaning the house, or doing chores, or…. This app combines great ease of use with the best voices, intonation, and sentence phrasing I’ve heard so far. It’s not quite as good as a human-read audiobook, but we are getting closer and closer. My questions were answered quickly by customer support.

When I reviewed this app in December (see below) we used it for reading books together but it’s become our go-to reading app now, with my husband using it to run lines for acting and daughter using to listen to assignments for homework. It’s such a delight. In December, we’d wanted Voicedream to use on new iPhones. I downloaded the ePub version of A Christmas Carol from Gutenberg and we all enjoyed listening to an old school story in a new school way. The basic task tips were helpful and so far it’s been a hit here. Great addition to our resources on the phone.

Delightful ★★★★★
by The Ever Visualist – Version 2.7.1 – Feb 19, 2013
I’m FANATICAL about this app. Sure, it has tons of features that no other speech app even comes close. But most of all, it is a DELIGHT to use. Just like when you use an iPhone after a Blackberry. This app awesome and the latest release is even better!

Best App for script to voice ★★★★★
by Stiggggs – Version 2.7.1 – Feb 18, 2013
So far this is the best script to voice that I have tried. It is well worth the money. I use it every day. I have bought a few of the voices now. The English Peter and the American Julie are the most natural of all the voices. Buying those is well spent. They update the App regularly with real improvements that I can see. They get back to me very quickly when i have a question. There are many of the same conveniences that are on kindle readers like highlight and bookmark. I am so far very happy with the App and the service.

Excellent App ★★★★★
by w r k – Version 2.7.1 – Feb 17, 2013
I have tried many apps for reading ebooks aloud. This one is the best by far and well worth the money. I don’t usually leave reviews, but just had to for this app. When there is no audiobook available for a certain book or if buying audiobooks is not in your budget, no problem…just use Voice Dream. All of the sudden, any DRM-free ebook can become an audiobook. I listen to my ebooks as I fall asleep each night, so I really like the sleep feature. I set it for 30 minutes (you can set it for any number of minutes in 5 minute increments) and then it pauses playback after that amount of time (and I am almost always asleep by then). When I get ready to listen again, I can use the rewind to skip back 30 seconds at a time until I find the spot I last remember hearing. It acts just like it is playing back an audio recording except you can also follow along on screen as it reads the text. It also shows how much time remains until the end of the book and also how much time has elapsed since the beginning. If you adjust the reading speed, these times adjust accordingly. The voices are great, too. There are so many choices available. The app also works with my Bluetooth headphones and speakers. Pressing pause on the Bluetooth device pauses the reading. Play starts it again, and I have set it in this app so that a press on the fast forward or reverse advances or rewinds a few sentences from the current spot if I need to hear something again. However, you can also set it so that fast forward and reverse moves to the next or previous book or article on your playlist. You can set any number of bookmarks, but it also just picks up where it last left off in the book. The only wish I have is that I could switch between my book in this app and the same book in iBooks, but that is such a trivial thing it doesn’t even matter. If I go from listening to just reading, I could just keep using Voice Dream. But if I do use iBooks instead, I just do a word search for a fairly unique phrase in the spot around where I am reading and that works just fine. When I switch back to Voice Dream, I do the same thing in reverse. This is probably my most favorite and useful app on my iPod Touch.

Just what I was looking for! ★★★★★
by LantaNana – Version 2.7.1 – Feb 17, 2013
Great app, works well, great updates, great features. The only thing missing for me is being able to export the audio files, and I might have missed the instructions on doing that. But I bought it to be a TTS app and it does the job well! I love the reduced price and think it is worth every cent.

Easily speak text and HTML on Dropbox ★★★★★
by Another casual gamer – Version 2.7.1 – Feb 17, 2013
It does exactly what I want: read text and HTML files on the web and on my Dropbox. Valuable features include: • You can double tap on a word to start reading from there. No need to start over like on free speech synth apps. • Reads in the background, freeing you to use other apps or turn off the display and save battery. • A very responsive developer that actually considers and implements features I personally request! This is well worth the money compared to the cheaper alternatives, which seem have fewer features and are reportedly buggier.

Great program. ★★★★
by Patmfish – Version 2.7.1 – Feb 16, 2013
I can listen to texts whenever I’m walking or running. I’ve purchased a couple of voices which are quite good. Just don’t have time to sit and read and I can listen while I’m out and about. Love the dropbox integration. Latest update added a slew of features. I would like to be able start at any point in a book. Not possible at this time.

Fantastic. Totally worth it ★★★★★

To all ADD/ADHD ★★★★★
by Boat-reviews – Version 2.7.1 – Feb 13, 2013
To all ADD/ADHD who have difficulty reading because: They read slowly, it’s hard for them to focus, they hate reading, etc; this app is perfect for them. Gets better with every update release!

Awesome App! ★★★★★
by lausau7 – Version 2.7.0 – Feb 12, 2013
I am a Resource teacher who works with dyslexic students. This app is extremely useful for students with reading disabilities. The Bookshare integration works well, and this app is more flexible (and less expensive) than the Read2Go app. Most of all, the customer support with this app is fantastic. This developer really strives to meet the needs of his users! You won’t regret buying this application.

Sounds so human! I’m reading everywhere! ★★★★★
by Mediavic – Version 2.7.0 – Feb 10, 2013
This is the closest I’ve heard to a real human reading. For less than one audible.com book, you can have this app read as many books as you want! I must say, Heather’s voice is better than some audio books I’ve heard. Support questions are answered promptly, and I they are working on improvements that will make it even better. What I would like to see in future releases would be more seamless, real time integration with safari and other applications (rather than a 2 step process). I understand that there are limits on the iOS platform, but the simpler it is, the better! Keep up the good work!

GREAT!! ★★★★★
by DATBOIE! – Version 2.7.0 – Feb 9, 2013

Best app I have ever purchased! ★★★★★
by JW-maxima – Version 2.7.0 – Feb 3, 2013
Voice Dream changed my life! It has made college reading assignments that are difficult and hard to comprehend much easier. It has also decreased the time spent completing reading assignments because I no longer have read it over and over to get what I have just read. Don’t know what I would do with out it!

Step Above the Rest ★★★★★
by Ecuasage – Version 2.7.0 – Feb 3, 2013
Incredibly useful for listening to drafts of my book and those from other authors who ask me to screen their work. The voices are easier to understand than Apple’s text-to-speech programs. Best yet, this doesn’t require an internet connection once it is downloaded. Great idea having it link to Dropbox!

Great alternative tool for Special Education from K-college students ★★★★★
by Blindeducator – Version 2.7.0 – Feb 3, 2013
This is a great app for students that have a learning disability or students that are always on the go and need to listen to class notes or textbooks. The way it allows BookShare accounts 1to be tied to the app and the interface with dropbox. Only wish it would play nicer with voice over, like to review words and let voice over users look up words like all other users. Other then that. This app is worth the $14.99 and with the added voices is a must have app for avid readers and for readers with a print disability.

Very nice update ★★★★★
by Jwsudd – Version 2.7.0 – Feb 3, 2013
Last update made it more commuter-friendly, with +/-30 second buttons. Now all it needs is a customizable pronunciation dictionary, so I can tell it how to pronounce technical acronyms instead of doing text editing in another app to get correct pronunciations.

Just great ★★★★★
by enigma2me – Version 2.7.0 – Feb 3, 2013
I use it all the time. While the voice has improved, it is still not quite a real person reading… but it is *very* good. Evernote users, integration should be coming soon.

I’m a busy law student, Mom, Wife, Dog and cat owner, and I need time for others things, like showering. This fantastic App has the BEST VOICE (Tracy)!! I Love it! Better than my Kindle, my IPad’s speech reader that Apple installed, better than the reader on my MacBook Pro. And it is able to communicate with my dropbox, where I save my PDF files to be read to me by Tracy. I did pay for the others.. They had weird bugs and weren’t user friend;y. Love this one. Thank you for making it. Continue to innovate please.

Great overall, but missing a couple features for $10 ★★★★
by mthale – Version 2.6.2 – Jan 28, 2013
I have been waiting for a good TTS app like this one, but there a couple features missing. As it seems many people (including myself) use TTS for hands free listening (in the car or otherwise), it would help if the pause button functionality were linked up with the music player, so that i could use my bluetooth headset to stop and go when i need to. also, the forward and back functionality is there for jumping from item to item (on bluetooth and on device), but it seems like a good idea to allow programming those same forward and back buttons to go back and forward sentences like the touch gestures allow… see ambling pro for a good example of all this. also, for $10, i would say a good male and female voice should be included. heather is great. how bout ryan? also, some organization in the voice store would be nice. the kids’ voices and british voices are randomly placed in the list…

by _aria – Version 2.6.2 – Jan 27, 2013
I am in grad school, and was searching for an app that would read my books and article notes from Dropbox. The ability to read in a variety of voices was equally important to help me read large amounts over extended periods of time. I appreciate no longer having to read everything in the VoiceOver voice. Thank you for improving VoiceOver compatibility, and please keep VoiceOver users in mind in future releases. Thank you!

Need for Grad School ★★★★★
by MeganPod – Version 2.6.2 – Jan 24, 2013
If you are in grad school or even college, then you know how much reading there is to do! It’s app reads PDF files to you while you shower, play Words with Friends, or read along. It can even play while you are in the car like a book-on-tape! It’s so great and necessary for college! Great app!

After much research, I discovered this outstanding application. With one click, the webpage in my Chromium browser is uploaded to Instapaper where Voice Dream retrieves, parses and reads the article with a remarkably clear human-sounding voice. Try it and you may never read again.

Very helpful app. I’m American but found the British Peter voice much easier to understand than the default voice (Heather).

Great all-around reader ★★★★★
by Rudywaltz – Version 2.6.2 – Jan 14, 2013
I love the reading interface, adjustable speeds, voice quality. I got Pocket and can dump just about any text in there and, after an easy sync, it appears in this reader. I wish it could read iBooks but I don’t think that’s the app’s fault (there are licensing and DRM issues involved). It takes a little time to work out all the best routes to getting text into the software, but once there it works swimmingly. I especially love how it calculates the time a doc will take to play based on the reading speed you set and lets you navigate as if it were an audio file in addition to the other methods of scrolling and navigating. The voices are all very good and preferable to the one voice built into the iOS. My only complaint is that I’m not so keen on the one male American voice. I went with a British voice (Graham) instead for male and use the included American female voice when I want a woman to be reading. Graham is great, but a couple more choices for American male voices would be nice. I really like Alex in the Mac OS and would enjoy a clone of him here.

by docdada – Version 2.6.2 – Jan 9, 2013
Voice Dream is the voice reader app to buy. This app deserves 5 stars. It is a feature rich app and the sound quality is excellent. It even reads PDF’s. The developer responded quickly to my email request for features. I’ve tried every voice reader / text-to-speech app I could find; there are definitely some that are much better than others. Voice Dream is the best.

Great App for editing! ★★★★★
by topsy13 – Version 2.6.2 – Jan 9, 2013

Great app The voice is amazingly good for a computer. I had it read a challenging Victor Hugo novel and it guessed at the French names better than I could. Well worth the price. The timer mode is great at night. I found a small bug but the developer wrote right back and was already aware of it and is fixing it in the next update.

Best Mobile TTS ★★★★★
by AuralReader – Version 2.6.2 – Jan 8, 2013
NOTE: After purchase, this app will read all the text you want, forever, for free. There’s no per word fee, no subscription fees, Nothing. I can’t understand how it is possible for someone to confuse reading text with translating text to a different language. Now for my review: This app is the gold standard for mobile TTS. I’ve been a TTS user for many years, and for a long time I thought it was strange that mobile TTS apps were of such poor quality, until this one came along. Through gestures, you have such complete and fluid control over how speech is rendered that it puts even the expensive PC TTS software to shame. Great for both educational use and for personal productivity. Highly recommended.

Great for Instapaper ★★★★★
by Defstar – Version 2.6.2 – Jan 7, 2013
Text-to-Speech has gotten so much better lately. I have it synced with my Instapaper so I can keep “reading” in my car on the way to work. This is the best one available for iOS by far. Totally worth it!

Awesome app!!! ★★★★★
by Me856743207 – Version 2.6.2 – Jan 7, 2013
I absolutely love this app. I was using Read2go from Bookshare, but this app gives me more formats, the interface is easy to use and it is very accessible with Voiceover. Also, the high quality voices that are purchsed from within the app are easy to download and they read nicely without any of the jerking and strangeness that sometimes accompanies text to speech readers. There has never been anything quite like this app, it is by far one of the best apps for this, for both productivity, and reading documents on the go as well as pleasure reading. I am totally blind, and it not only helps me in my work in reading documents that I need to access whether in my dropbox folder or with bookshare, but if I want to sit down with a good book, it reads Epub files, those that are in iBooks, among the other formats, and I absolutely love the ease of which it handles these. Downloads are quick and easy both for books and the voices, and future updates are going to improve and increase navigation as time goes on. Amazing app and the only one I’ll ever use from here on out. Sorry read2go, but you don’t do multiple formats, and you’re ten bucks more expensive. Way to go voce Dream Llc. Keep it up!!!

Speech to Text LOVE! ★★★★★
by abstractblack – Version 2.6.2 – Dec 26, 2012
The variety of voices, along with the controllable voice parameters make listening to my performance name in Indian English so darn sweet! Haven’t even gotten to the ‘audiobook’ feature yet, but look forward to not having to buy the text and audio version of a book or having to choose between the two. Please add more voices. All forms of ethnic English would be great and really personalizing. I’d like a Jamaican accent please! And various forms of Southern USA speech, i.e., Kentucky, Louisiana, Texas, West Virginia all have different tonalities… Where can we sign up to have our own voice analyzed…? Think about it….

Christmas Present To Ourselves ★★★★★

Fantastic for listening to eBooks and PDF ★★★★★
by Giggi1972 – Version 2.6.2 – Dec 24, 2012
This app is great. Very polished. The voices are the best out there. I load up and scroll through 1000-page ePub ebooks and it’s silky smooth. For all use I get out of it, it’s bargain. This developer really spent time on the details. For example, you can change to a different voice in the middle of listening and it just switches voice and keeps on reading with no break. No TTS software can do that! When you create a bookmark the paragraph glows for a second. Don’t listen to the complaints. Of course you can’t open copy-protected books borrowed from a library. Seems common sense to me.

Waiting for Evernote integration ★★★★
by TennisFitnessLove – Version 2.6.2 – Dec 21, 2012
This is a great app with new features added all the time. It would be great to have Evernote integration though. There are tons of us who save everything in Evernote instead of Dropbox or Instapaper… RSS feeds would be great too. For that I use Voice Brief app but I would switch completely here. Evernote next, please!!!

Good fundamental TTS reader, see pros and cons ★★★★★
by Dreamerv3 – Version 2.6.2 – Dec 16, 2012
I purchased voice dream reader TTS in order to help me study STEM materials as I learn programming, it is possible to use a good TTS reader for this type of study (as well as the study of biology, engineering texts, humanities texts, to say nothing of law textbooks) but there are challenges. I’ve made some notes which I hope will help other users. Note to developer: I hope you pay particular attention to my notes on looping, that feature-set is key to the success of your application in education. Over the past few years on iOS I have tried three main TTS readers for most of my textbook consumption, these are: 1.) Web Reader 2.) Read 2 Me 3.) iBooks with the iOS 6 TTS voices 4.) Voice Dream Reader #1 Web Reader: Great for reading webpages and it even has PDF functionality for reading PDFs in its browser, however one of the problems with using web reader is you have to first upload most of your content online. The TTS technology it uses is from acapella the same provider of the voices in this application. Web reader is not a good choice as a study tool because there is no looping feature and its PDF navigation features leave much to be desired. #2 Read 2 Me: The voice quality is excellent, getting text into the application is an exercise in pain and frustration, the application has also been updated quite infrequently over the past year and there have been some stability issues. #3 iBooks: iBooks from Apple is far and away the best consumption/learning oriented PDF reader I have used thus far. The typographical rendering is amazing, the way it renders tables of contents for PDFs is amazing, unfortunately the text to speech technology in the current version of iOS (6) is quite uncomfortable to listen to, The American female voice with which iOS comes bundled by default as the “Premium Voice” feels hurried (I mean to say the intonation is horrible) and mechanical in it’s expressive profile. If Apple were to port the Alex voice (currently on Mac OS X & the best TTS voice I’ve ever heard) then I would be singing the praises of iBooks and indeed iOS TTS then all that would be left would be the looping features but Apple doesn’t seem to care about this. #4 Voice Dream Reader: This application is the first credible attempt at solving the “courseware consumption challenge” which I strongly feel is central to many students’ struggle to matriculate through their educational careers. This is particularly true in the sciences, i.e. biology, chemistry, and engineering (where there is great opportunity for elaboration via written explanations of the underlying concepts which could then be read by TTS). The utility (necessity?) of TTS in humanities courseware consumption should be obvious. The following are a list of pros and cons I’ve discovered in my use of Voice Dream Reader. Pros: * Visual customizability of the reader display * Dropbox integration * Large voice pool from acapella (see priority #3 bug below) * Fast handling of 400+ page PDF documents. * Quick and easy bookmark and highlight tools * Built-in Acapella voice heather (same as in Web Reader) is much more comfortable to listen to than the nuance voice for iOS which Apple is using. –Can you hear me Apple? Port the Alex voice to iOS, the mobile platform where it can do the most good!– Cons: # PDF Documents are assimilated (when you open/load them into voice dream reader) into the app in a very crude manner. Having some understanding of data handling in applications I will explain it in a more “soup to nuts” fashion… It looks like what the developer of voice dream reader has done is: 1.) Access the PDF file 2.) Get all textual content inside the PDF file and shove it into one long string or a basic array. 3.) Spit that text string out onto the display in the TTS reader interface. When I say “spit that text string out” that is exactly what I mean, There is no searching through the initial PDF structure for chapter markers and other linked PDF metadata, all table of contents linkages are lost. That’s right you cannot use the TOC links and forget navigation by page number too. My suggestions to the developer: Priority #1: Go and load a large internally linked (this means a linked and functioning table of contents) PDF file into Apple’s iBooks reader application. Do you notice how the table of contents is formatted differently than the main text pages? Do you notice how tapping on a particular chapter or subchapter in the table of contents takes you directly to that part of the PDF? If you simply fixed that linkage issue in voice dream reader (I’m NOT asking you to make the display render out beautifully like iBooks) I’m asking for a stable and functional (links must work) table of contents. Priority #2: This is a feature request, this is a feature which is missing in all of the TTS readers I have evaluated over the last two years but which exists in study tools (such as ‘SpeedUp’ in the App Store) designed to play back audio files, it is a POWERFUL feature LOOP-MODE. Please implement a START and END “highlight selection mode” so that we the students can define areas of text as “highlights”. That’s step 1 next PLEASE implement a repeat (TTS playback loop) feature for highlight areas, just put a REPEAT ICON next to the PLAY ICON in the highlight chooser. That way a student can listen to a difficult passage several times until they finally comprehend the concept. I usually read a chapter at least 3 times before moving on, a loop-mode would make my study sessions much more productive. Please add a LOOP-MODE to highlights. You get extra credit for adding a loop-mode to chapters as well, but highlights are a good start. Priority #3: EDITED 12/16/2012 If you exit a particular PDF document (go back to the main list of PDF documents) and then click on the little ‘gear’ icon (settings), you may then be able to purchase additional voices. There is a bug which prevents purchases from “voice settings” within an open PDF document.

A fantastic app! ★★★★★
by Tangela Mahaffey – Version 2.6.2 – Dec 16, 2012
This feature-rich app is a must have for members of the vi community who like to read. In addition to all the features listed in the description, all of which work as advertised, the makers of this application seem truly committed to improving it. In the month and a half that I have used it, the company has released three updates, all of which have dramatically and substantially improved the accessibility and functionality. The addition of bookshare support, extensive list of file types available, and large number of additional voices, typically priced between ten and twenty dollars, but offered here for two, make this the best reading app I have had the pleasure of using.

Text to Speech software is generally a huge let down. So this software is fantastic given the competition. I would give it 5 stars if it had more OCR properties – some pdfs are full of text but as images. This software shows those files as empty. For six stars: some pdfs have text in the margins – textbooks, court transcripts – would be great if user could define part of each page to ignore.

Best TTS app on the market ★★★★★
by Penlope Swan – Version 2.6.0 – Dec 4, 2012
Love this app….I have purchased many other TTS apps, and have been using them for 2 years. This one is by far the most user friendly and feature rich app. You got it right for a reader of books in iBooks and on Internet. Wish I would have found you sooner. I will be sending more suggestions to make the app even better! Thanks. Finding this app made my day. Please note that the latest release as a bug not in previous releases! After pausing the speech and putting ipad in sleep mode, the app will speak one word when you turn the iPad back on. Please fix.

Absolutely love this app. Every feature is well designed and the voices contained are very high quality. It has really enhanced my overall iPad experience. Love the British voices!!! I wish so much it could be used to read my Kindle & iBooks.

Recommend to buy this app it is doing more work than the cost of $10. High quality voice fits 5000 characters, no glitches it great app. You’ll get so much knowledge of listening of other books that just don’t have time to seat and read. I usually don’t write comments but this is worth to tell others! May God bless you who worked an it and those who will use it for the praise of God!

Easily speak text and HTML on Dropbox ★★★★★
by Another casual gamer – Version 2.6.0 – Nov 29, 2012
It does exactly what I want: read text and HTML files on the web and on my Dropbox. Valuable features include: • You can double tap on a word to start reading from there. No need to start over like on free speech synth apps. • Reads in the background, freeing you to use other apps or turn off the display and save battery. Things that can be improved: • You can bookmark paragraphs. I would prefer if you could bookmark sentences or words, but paragraph resolution is good enough for most text. Overall, this is well worth the money compared to the cheaper alternatives, which seem have fewer features and are reportedly buggier.

Exactly what I was looking for ★★★★★

Fantastic Voice Dream update! ★★★★★
by NCGizmo – Version 2.6.0 – Nov 28, 2012
This update is amazing, this app just keeps getting better! I am dyslexic, and now Voice Dream has both a dyslexic friendly font and a focus mode to make reading along even easier. Wow – just notice the BookShare.org integration! Loving it! With the many other improvements, this update is a great addition. Thanks for the excellent product! NC “Dyslexic” Gismo

CONTINUES to be THE Best TTS of them all! ★★★★★
by MarkInPA – Version 2.5.1 – Dec 6, 2012
Review12/6/212: Voice Dream continues to amaze me — a very picky technology customer. It truly is a dream come true in portable TTS. When I first bought the app earlier this year, I was so very pleased with the features, especially compared to the competition (see my original review below). With every update, new WONDERFUL features have been added, without the bugs so common with the updates of other apps. The developer really takes user suggestion to heart and the result is a product that becomes increasingly more powerful, adding more features that make TTS more intuitive and productive. The latest features are fantastic. Thanks for a product I love! (No, I have no affiliation with the product or development people. These are the very sincere words of a very satisfied customer!)
Update 9/2012: I am still loving this amazing product! The most recent upgrade is fantastic, adding in-document search and copy & paste capabilities. Bravo!
Original Review: I am a new Voice Dream customer and I couldn’t be any happier. I have been a longtime TTS user of two competing products. The first one, although downloaded by many, has not been significantly updated in the last 2 years. It could use many improvements. The second TTS app I got just a few months ago and while it does have some good features, it was given to some odd and very inconvenient behavior. Then I discovered Voice Dream — and it IS a dream! This product completely BLOWS AWAY the competition. It has a great, clear and easy to use interface. There are so many different ways to bring text in to be read — using the “Open In…” from other apps, online via the built in browser or clipping services like Pocket or InstaPaper and, of course, by direct typing or copy and pasting. The voice synthesis is phenomenal and very natural and clear. My favorite is the British male Graham. I use this app for reading anything — web articles that I clip and want to read as I drive or am doing an activity where I can only listen, not read, books, articles and so much more. Thank you, Winston, for such a great app. From what I read in the reviews, the improvement and innovation have been ongoing. I give this incredible app 5 stars and a hearty TWO THUMBS UP!

If you’re looking for a text to speech app, look no further. Voice Dream will read from various input formats. So far, I’ve tried .pdf, Word .doc, Web pages, and iPhone cut & paste with great results. Voice quality is excellent. Also, happy to report that the seller provides prompt and courteous tech support.

Almost Perfect ★★★★★
by Shooter547 – Version 2.5.1 – Nov 14, 2012
After suffering with the poor performance of Speak-It for years I finally invested in the near perfect replacement. I use the app to read very long (2+ hour) books and articles. This app makes it easy to bookmark locations and easily return to the spot you pause playback. You can highlight text to remind you of important sections later. Speak-It used to crash constantly. Not this app. It did crash once, but when I re-ran the app it was very near where it had left off and it was easy for me to get going again quickly. Three features I’d request to make it perfect. 1) Sync across platforms. If I paste a text document into my iPhone app it should be waiting for me when I switch to my iPad. This should include the reading position, bookmarks, and highlights. 2) put in a “skip back” button to let me quickly go back 30″ or 1-minute and re-read something I missed. 3) Include the ability to select audio output options (Bluetooth, Connector, Speaker, etc) just like in other iOS audio apps. If you’re looking for a robust app for reading text out load in the background or while the device is locked, this is it!

Awesome app! ★★★★★
by ChuckHoffman – Version 2.5.1 – Nov 9, 2012

Best Text To Speech App ★★★★★
by lunarcontact – Version 2.5.1 – Oct 31, 2012
Yes, it’s a little more than others, and the in-app purchase of more voices doesn’t seem worth it, but it’s way better than other apps and worth the extra money. 1) You can listen in the background. Other apps if you exit, it’ll close. 2) it has a sleep timer, so you can set it to shut off 3) easy import of pdfs AND you can create playlists. 4) The voices reads properly, i.e. if there is a question mark at the end of a sentence, the the voice inflection will go up. 5) offers book marking AND highlighting AND ability to make notes!!!!!! Huge help for editors. I downloaded the lite versions of several and found all the features worth purchasing the full app and I highly recommend.

Voice Dream is the best text-to-speech reader ★★★★★
by WillisKGLP – Version 2.5.0 – Oct 24, 2012
I am a huge fan of this must-have app. Voice Dream is the best text-to-speech reader that I have found. My prior favorite was Natural Reader on the PC, but this is a lot easier to use. Voice Dream is able to import PDF, DOC, RTF & TXT files, or read from a web site. It easily integrates with Dropbox & Pocket. A wide array of additional voices are available for purchase, but I like the quality of the included voice (Heather). You are able to adjust the words-per-minute speech rate. The developer was receptive to suggestions/questions that I had & quickly responded to them. Great job Winston !!

Voice Dream is AWESOME! ★★★★★
by Robexican – Version 2.5.0 – Oct 23, 2012
I have been looking for an app like this for a long time. It is so stream line and perfect for college students. I can get tons of reading done while on the bus or just walking to class. The only down side to the app is that it struggles with PDF’s. Especially if there is a lot of images or if your PDF is in a text book style format where there are lots of side text boxes and diagrams. Other than that it is exactly what I need. Download the “drop box” app and you can link documents and even photos from your Mac or PC strait to your iPhone. This allows you to access your documents from virtually any where in the world where you have an Internet connection. You can even cut an paste large sections of text into the editor from online readings and save them as a word file if you have to do research from your iPhone It even will read the word file back to you! LIFE CHANGING APP!

This app works great! She reads exceptionally well and the ability to categorize your work is amazing. I put my notes over the radio via Bluetooth and it works like charm. Winston has out done yourself. You receive 5*s and an attaboy for excellent work.

Voice dream reader ★★★★★

Great app. I have a reader on my home PC and was skeptical that an App would be the dame quality, but it is!! well worth the small investment if you like to listen to things that are only in print.

Awesome app!!!!!! ★★★★★
by Skrpo1 – Version 2.5.0 – Oct 21, 2012
I live this app. I used it for a long trip to listed to books I normally read on my iPhone. The voice is clear and easy to understand. Pronunciation on some words were off but I can live with that with the subject matter. I did find a couple of bugs. On a long story, the app will continue reading but will revert to an earlier portion of the story if not starting from the beginning also if interrupted with a phone call, the app will loose its spot when reading and go to the beginning of the story causing you to find your place again.

Great App and support ★★★★★
by Hanthus – Version 2.5.0 – Oct 21, 2012
This is a fundamental part of my iphone usage, everything now is an audio book for me, and I can switch voices to my desire. The app works perfectly, but not only that, a while ago I sent an email to the developers suggesting a feature (clipboard option on the add article menu) and they took less than a day to answer! Gotta love that, you just know the app is going to have a long life! Grab it, you won’t regret it!

The best text-to-speech reader, period. ★★★★★
by Granger4523 – Version 2.5.0 – Oct 21, 2012
I read a lot and bought nearly all the 4+ star epub, mobi, PDF, text2speech apps in Apple app store. Voice dream meets nealy all my demands for text-to-speech app under one roof. Tech support is first class. Best $5 I’ve ever spent on my ipad. The Instapaper subscription is also a worthy purchase if you read a lot.

…wish the font could be larger. Other than that… I’ve tried many. The voice is pleasant. I like the highlight. It helps to track easily while reading. It’s the best autoscroll. I use it daily. You won’t regret it.

So productive ★★★★
by Ldv3 – Version 2.4.1 – Oct 21, 2012
Great app. I feel so productive going over my case studies in the gym, car, falling asleep. Works really well and the scroll as you read supplements the audio nicely. I only wish there was some way of excluding headers and footers when importing documents. It becomes really annoying if the documents have a header or footer on every page. Also, skipping to some text could be improved. I have a tough time starting at another point. One last minor complaint, easily allowing comments and highlighting would blow my mind.

Best in class ★★★★★

This app is soo awesome!! I’m in college and this helps me get through my textbook chapters quicker and easier! The voices are conversational and easy to understand. Other readers sound too much like a computer but the voices on this app are more human. I wish I found this sooner!! Love it and absolutely recommend it.
